Groundwater resource-development and protection is a complicated scientific area of professional geological practice. The Groundwater Resources Working Group of the UNECE-EGRM works to apply UNFC to groundwater-resource development, protection, and conservation. I have been a member of GRWG since 2019.
The United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) is an international classification system for energy and earth resource data. UNFC structures data and information about resource projects to classify projects according to three main categories: the Environmental-Socio-Economic Viability (E Category), the Technical Feasibility (F Category), and the Degree of Confidence in the estimated quantities of potential production (G Category). These categories can then be visualized in three axes, E – F - G as in the UNFC cube shown.
UNFC and its related UN Resource Management System are developed under the aegis of the UN Economic Commission for Europe's Expert Group in Resource Management (EGRM). EGRM added groundwater to the system in 2019. The official website for UNFC is United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) | UNECE .
Development of UNFC is delivered by the Groundwater Resources Working Group (GRWG), a voluntary team of over twenty international experts, students, and stakeholders interested in applying UNFC successfully to issues of groundwater development in general, and groundwater protection in other energy and earth resources in particular, within the UNFC resource framework.
The blogs below capture my personal discovery, exploration, and conclusions as we collectively develop UNFC and UNRMS for groundwater. These views will be entirely my own and do not reflect any official views of UNECE, EGRM, GRWG or any of my past, present, or future employers, colleagues, or clients.
